What does a successful OKR onboarding look like?

Every organization and implementation is different, but in general, a successful OKR onboarding shares the following characteristics:

  1. Key leaders “walk the talk” of OKRs, modeling OKR best practices (including learning in public)

  2. People participating in the OKR program do their own labor, treating OKR core team members as subject matter experts when their assistance is needed, not as administrative labor to “make the OKRs happen”

  3. The organization adopts a playbook that contains important words and meanings of the OKR implementation (including a definition, examples, and scenarios of the important terms: Objective, and Key Result)

  4. Training or enablement is available to meet the following minimum needs:

    1. Senior leader OKR onboarding (ideally with 1:1 coaching)

    2. People leader OKR onboarding (ideally with group coaching / office hours available)

    3. OKR Coach and Core Team Expert Training (supported by an ongoing community)

    4. Distributed OKR Basics trainings for everyone in the organization, including an OKRs 101 (<15 minutes) and a basic “Creating OKRs” training workshop (<60 minutes)

  5. The organization integrates OKRs into their operating rhythm, doesn’t just stop at creating OKRs; and

  6. Ultimately, the organization’s performance improves as a result of the benefits of OKRs!
